Hollywood Quagmire by Timothy LamprosHow to Stop the Waste, Save 3.6 Billion Dollars a Year, and Avoid an Actors Strike in 2008!

The Hollywood film and television industry is facing a crisis. Many insiders believe a 2008 strike by the Screen Actors Guild is inevitable. Such a strike will cost Hollywood an estimated $2 billion per month and may change the future of the industry permanently!

Production costs are skyrocketing while profits are in a death spiral. Hollywood is wasting 3.6 BILLION dollars per year!

If production is running 300 12-hour days per year, that’s an industry-wide waste of $12,018,000 per day and $16,691 per minute! That does not include the impact of salaries for top stars, the expansion of alternative media, electronic piracy, or any of the other things that are being blamed for Hollywood’s demise.

So what is the source of this waste? Primarily it comes from wasted time on the set, which in turn is caused primarily by improperly trained actors! Massive budget and schedule overages are commonplace. Star actors are being turned down for parts or refusing parts when studios can't or won't meet their normal pay scale.

And it's not just the actors' fault. The whole system is broken. Everyone contributes to the problem - acting teachers and coaches, agents, managers, casting directors, and directors. The Screen Actors Guild, along with the studios and producers, can fix this problem and avoid a strike next year. More importantly, it can alter the way Hollywood does business and allow the film and television industry to survive.

But it will require change in many areas, and change is never easy. This book points the way to a solution. It should be read by every Hollywood insider.

"As Chair of the DGA UPM/AD Mentor Committee it is my responsibility to provide regular training for top working members to upgrade their abilities. The UPM's and AD's primary job is to manage the set especially when it involves implementing efficiencies. Your book Hollywood Quagmire is an insightful industry white paper flagging probably the most flagrant issue when it comes to financial overruns and should be required reading for the entire DGA Team. Your "time wasting" analysis is very similar to the over all scheduling/budget judgments UPM's and AD's make when assessing every day's work. Thank you for bringing much clarity to the ultimate egregious cost squandering untold truth in production."

Sincerely,

Randy Turrow, Chair

Hello, Mr. Lampros.

"All I can say is how surprised I was by the number of otherwise accomplished and seasoned actors there were who had no facility for marks and camera moves and technique and etc. It's interesting for me because as an erstwhile 2nd AD, I was only vaguely aware of why shots were being repeated, and why a scheduled day would run over. In that capacity, you think that your own production is running into a specific set of problems, unique to your own situation, but your book really opened my eyes to how widespread the problems really are. I've seen my share crew f-ups, but, as I read your book and memory began to serve, I began to realize that camera training for actors is, indeed, extremely limited if not non-existent. It really is a kind of black hole in the whole process. Every other aspect of production is a result of training upon training upon training, but then on-camera talent arrives with questions and confusion and chaos. The stunning part about your book was the tally of costs this lack of preparation can cause. I have been preaching, pleading, really, for all my actor friends to find and read your work.

You have done a great service."

Bruce Cervi - Producer, 1st & 2nd AD

Dear Mr. Lampros

"I have been a member of the Screen Actors Guild since 1953 and I've never seen this problem so clearly defined - or heard a better solution! This book should change the industry forever!"
